Gaza Governorate, as the heart of the Gaza Strip, has witnessed numerous bloody conflicts. After the 1948 war, it came under Egyptian administration and was occupied by Israel in 1967. During the First and Second Intifadas, Gaza City was a center of protests and clashes. Following Israel's unilateral withdrawal in 2005, control was handed to the Palestinian Authority, but after Hamas took over in 2007, repeated Israeli wars (2008‑2009, 2012, 2014, 2021, and 2023‑2026) have caused immense damage to infrastructure and civilians. Gaza Governorate has repeatedly been the target of the heaviest bombings, destroying residential areas, hospitals, and schools.
