Gaza City, one of the oldest cities in the world, has witnessed countless wars. In the 1948 war (Nakba), Egypt took control of the city and a large wave of Palestinian refugees sought shelter there. In the 1967 Six‑Day War, Israel occupied Gaza City. After Israel's unilateral withdrawal in 2005, the city became a center of resistance and a scene of repeated conflicts. The wars of 2008‑2009, 2012, 2014, 2021, and especially the 2023‑2026 war (Al‑Aqsa Flood and Iron Swords) have caused immense damage to infrastructure and civilians. Eastern neighborhoods such as Shuja'iyya and Tel al‑Hawa have been repeatedly leveled.
