Wars History
Zadar County in northern Dalmatia has been a strategically important region of Croatia throughout history, witnessing numerous wars and conflicts from antiquity to the present day.
Ancient and Medieval Wars
- Illyrian Wars (2nd century BC): The Romans gradually conquered the Liburnian region, and Zadar became a Roman municipium in 59 BC, later designated Colonia Iulia Iader.
- Siege of Zadar (1202 AD): During the Fourth Crusade, Venetian and Crusader forces besieged and captured Zadar. The city remained under Venetian rule until 1358.
- Venetian-Ottoman Wars (15th-18th centuries): Zadar, as part of the Republic of Venice, was besieged multiple times by Ottoman forces but never fell. The Renaissance defensive walls of Zadar were built during this period.
World War I (1914-1918)
Zadar was under Austro-Hungarian rule. After the empire's collapse, the Treaty of Rapallo (1920) assigned Zadar and several islands to Italy, making it an Italian enclave in Dalmatia.
World War II (1941-1945)
- Bombing of Zadar (November 1943 - October 1944): Zadar, under Italian and later German control, suffered one of the most intense Allied aerial bombardments in Europe. Over 54 air raids by US and British forces destroyed approximately 80% of the city's buildings and killed between 1,000 and 4,000 of its 20,000 inhabitants. Zadar became known as the "Dresden of the Adriatic."
- Yugoslav Air Force Bombing (8 April 1941): During the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia, the Yugoslav air force bombed Zadar.
Croatian War of Independence (1991-1995)
- Battle of Zadar (16 September - 5 October 1991): The Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) under Major General Vladimir Vuković and Colonel Ratko Mladić advanced toward Zadar. The Croatian National Guard under Colonel Josip Tuličić defended the city, with 34 civilians killed by artillery bombardment.
- Škabrnja Massacre (18 November 1991): After the fall of Škabrnja village, JNA and Serb paramilitary forces killed 39 civilians and 14 Croatian soldiers, burying victims in a mass grave.
- Operation Maslenica (22-27 January 1993): The Croatian Army recaptured the Maslenica Bridge area, restoring the land link between Dalmatia and the rest of Croatia.
- Operation Storm (August 1995): The Croatian Army liberated the remaining occupied areas of Zadar County.
