Indigenous Peoples and Pre-Colonial Wars

Before European contact, Colorado was inhabited by Indigenous peoples including the Ute, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Comanche, Apache, Pueblo, and Shoshone. These nations had conflicts among themselves over territory and resources. The Ute dominated the Rocky Mountains. The Cheyenne and Arapaho controlled the eastern plains. The Comanche ranged the southern regions. Intertribal warfare was common.

Spanish and Mexican Colonial Conflicts

Spain claimed Colorado in the 16th century but faced resistance from Indigenous peoples. The Pueblo Revolt of 1680 briefly expelled the Spanish from the region. Mexican independence in 1821 brought Colorado under Mexican control. Mexican authority was minimal. Indigenous peoples continued to control most of Colorado. The US expansion ended Spanish and Mexican claims.

US-Indian Wars in Colorado

The US-Indian Wars in Colorado from the 1850s-1880s were genocidal campaigns against Indigenous peoples. The Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 killed over 230 Cheyenne and Arapaho. The US military forced tribes onto reservations. Treaties were systematically violated. Indigenous resistance was crushed. The wars ended Indigenous sovereignty in Colorado.

Colorado Gold Rush Conflicts

The 1858 Pike's Peak Gold Rush brought massive conflict to Colorado. Thousands of settlers flooded into Indigenous territories. Mining claims led to disputes. Violence between settlers and Indigenous peoples was constant. The US military protected settler interests. The gold rush was a war of dispossession that transformed Colorado.

Labor Wars in Colorado

Colorado experienced violent labor conflicts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Ludlow Massacre of 1914 killed coal miners and their families. The Cripple Creek labor wars pitted miners against the state. The Colorado National Guard was used against workers. Labor violence defined Colorado's industrial history.

Cold War and Military Buildup

Colorado became a center of Cold War military activity. NORAD was established in Colorado Springs. The Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant produced plutonium triggers. Fort Carson and other bases trained soldiers. The military-industrial complex shaped Colorado's economy and politics.
