
Cincinnati was a key military base in the War of 1812. General William Henry Harrison organized the Northwest Army from Cincinnati. Fort Washington in Cincinnati was the logistics center for US forces.
Cincinnati sat on the border between Union and Confederacy. In 1862, the Confederate army under Edmund Kirby Smith threatened Cincinnati. For two weeks, the city was under siege. Cincinnati was also a major Underground Railroad station.
On April 9, 2001, Cincinnati police killed Timothy Thomas, a 19-year-old Black man. This was the 15th police killing of a Black man since 1995. Protests turned into riots — 4 days of violence, 4 dead, 300 wounded.
