Dario Kordić was the most powerful Bosnian Croat political leader in Central Bosnia during the 1992-1994 Croat-Bosniak war. As Vice President of the self-proclaimed Croatian Republic of Herzeg-Bosnia and President of the HDZ-BiH, he was convicted by the ICTY for planning and instigating the ethnic cleansing campaign against Bosniak civilians in the Lašva Valley.
ICTY Conviction (February 26, 2001): Sentenced to 25 years imprisonment [citation:1][citation:4].
Crimes Convicted:
Key Findings from the Trial Chamber:
Sentence and Release: Sentenced to 25 years on February 26, 2001. Sentence affirmed on appeal on December 17, 2004. Transferred to Austria on June 8, 2006, to serve his sentence. Early release granted effective June 6, 2014 [citation:1].
Dario Kordić was the highest-ranking Bosnian Croat politician convicted by the ICTY for his role in planning and instigating the Lašva Valley ethnic cleansing campaign against Bosniak civilians. As Vice President of the Croatian Community of Herzeg-Bosnia (HZ-HB) and President of the HDZ-BiH, he was found to be the principal political leader responsible for the persecution, murder, and forcible expulsion of Bosnian Muslims from the Lašva Valley region of Central Bosnia during the 1992-1994 Bosniak-Croat war [citation:1][citation:4].
The ICTY Trial Chamber concluded that Kordić "enthusiastically participated in the common design of persecution by planning, preparing and ordering those parts of the campaign which fell within his sphere of authority." He was present at meetings where the April 16, 1993 attack on Ahmići was authorized, which resulted in over 100 Bosniak civilians being massacred, including 32 women and 11 children. His political authority combined with substantial military influence made him the key regional leader in implementing the goal of creating a Croat-controlled territory cleansed of its Bosniak population [citation:1][citation:8].
Presiding Judge Richard May stated at sentencing: "The fact you were a politician and took no part in the actual execution of the crimes makes no difference. You played your part as surely as the men who fired the guns. Indeed, the fact you were a leader aggravates the offences" [citation:7][citation:9].
Dario Kordić was born on December 14, 1960, in Sarajevo, PR Bosnia and Herzegovina, FPR Yugoslavia [citation:1]. He studied at the University of Sarajevo and rose rapidly within the Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HDZ-BiH), becoming its President in his hometown of Busovača, then President of his Regional Community [citation:1][citation:4].
In November 1991, following the proclamation of the Croatian Community of Herzeg-Bosnia (HZ-HB), Kordić became its Vice President and a member of its Presidency, serving under President Mate Boban from 1991 until 1995 [citation:1]. The HZ-HB was established with the stated intention of eventually becoming part of the Republic of Croatia [citation:4]. The Croatian Defence Council (HVO) was created in April 1992 as the executive, administrative, and supreme military organ of the HZ-HB [citation:1].
Kordić combined political authority with substantial military influence. On December 27, 1991, he attended a meeting in Zagreb chaired by Croatian President Franjo Tuđman to formulate Croatia's strategy regarding Bosnia. At this meeting, Kordić declared that the Croatian people of the Travnik region were ready to accede to the Croatian state "at all costs... any other option would be considered treason" [citation:1].
By the end of 1992, on the eve of the Croat-Bosniak conflict, Kordić had established himself as the dominant political and military figure in Central Bosnia. Although he held no formal military rank and was not part of the official HVO command structure, he negotiated ceasefires and issued orders of direct military significance. The ICTY found that Kordić played a key role in the planning, organisation, promotion, and implementation of a politico-military campaign of persecution against Bosniaks, particularly in the Lašva Valley [citation:1][citation:4].
On October 6, 1997, Kordić voluntarily surrendered to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague [citation:1]. On February 26, 2001, after a 20-month trial with over 240 witnesses and more than 4,500 exhibits, he was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for crimes against humanity, grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions, and violations of the laws or customs of war [citation:4][citation:5]. His sentence was affirmed on appeal on December 17, 2004 [citation:6].
Kordić was transferred to Austria on June 8, 2006, to serve the remainder of his sentence [citation:6]. His application for early release was initially denied in May 2010 due to the seriousness of his crimes, but he was ultimately granted early release on May 21, 2014, effective June 6, 2014, after having served two-thirds of his sentence [citation:1].
